If you already know what you want to study, a subject ranking tells you more than a university's overall position. In the THE World University Rankings by Subject 2026, published on 21 January 2026, Harvard leads engineering, Oxford leads computer science and medicine, MIT leads business and economics, and Stanford leads law. The best-placed Pakistani universities we found sit in the 401–500 band in four of these tables, and we found none in law.
This guide gives the global top 5 in each of these five subjects, shows where Pakistani universities are best placed, and adds what QS's 2026 subject rankings confirm. Subject rankings change every year and belong to their publishers, so use these as a starting point and check the publishers' own pages.
Why subject rankings matter
An overall ranking blends every department of a university into one number. That hides a lot. A university can be modest overall and strong in one field, or famous overall and only average in the subject you care about.
If you are applying for a master's or PhD abroad, look at the strength of the department, not only the university's overall rank. For the overall tables, see our guide to THE vs QS 2027 and our list of Pakistan's best-placed universities.
THE subject rankings 2026: global top 5
These come from THE's subject tables for 2026, which are the latest THE subject edition. "=" means a shared position, so medicine has six names in its top 5.
| Subject (THE 2026) | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering | Harvard | Oxford | =MIT | =Stanford | Cambridge |
| Computer science | Oxford | Cambridge | ETH Zurich | MIT | Princeton |
| Medicine and health | Oxford | Cambridge | Harvard | Imperial | =Johns Hopkins, =Stanford |
| Business and economics | MIT | Stanford | Tsinghua | Oxford | UC Berkeley |
| Law | Stanford | NYU | Cambridge | Columbia | Oxford |
In engineering, MIT and Stanford share third place. Outside the US and UK, ETH Zurich makes the computer science top 5 and Tsinghua the business and economics top 5.
The tables are large. The 2026 engineering table covers 1,555 universities from 98 countries and territories, medicine covers 1,230 and business and economics covers 1,067.
Pakistan in THE's 2026 subject tables
Below the top few hundred, THE places universities in bands, and the order within a band is not published. We have checked these placings on THE's own university profiles. We did not check every Pakistani profile, so other universities may share these bands.
| Subject (THE 2026) | Pakistan's best-placed include | Band |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering | NUST, COMSATS University Islamabad | 401–500 |
| Computer science | NUST, UET Taxila | 401–500 |
| Medicine and health | University of Lahore | 401–500 |
| Business and economics | LUMS, NUST, Quaid-i-Azam University, COMSATS | 401–500 |
Law: news coverage of the 2026 subject tables by ProPakistani reported no Pakistani university in THE's law table. We could not confirm this on THE's own table.
A few things stand out. NUST appears in three of the four subjects. LUMS, which sits in the 1001–1200 band in THE's overall 2027 table, is in the same 401–500 band as NUST and Quaid-i-Azam University for business and economics. That is a good example of why it's worth checking the subject as well as the overall rank.
QS subject rankings 2026: what we can confirm
The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 were published on 25 March 2026. QS's tables only load in a browser, so we list only the positions QS states in its own text.
- Engineering and technology: MIT is first (QS).
- Computer science and information systems: MIT is first, with NUS and Oxford joint fourth (QS).
- Medicine: Harvard first, Oxford second, Stanford third (QS).
- Business and management studies: Harvard is first, INSEAD fourth and NUS eighth (QS).
- Law and legal studies: Harvard is first (QS).
For Pakistan, 35 Pakistani institutions appear somewhere in the QS 2026 subject tables, as Dawn reported. LUMS is in the 101–150 band for business and management studies. NUST is Pakistan's highest-placed university in engineering and technology, according to Business Recorder.
If you want an MBA rather than a business degree, MBA programmes have their own rankings. See our guide to the FT and QS MBA rankings.
How to use subject rankings, and their limits
- Use the broad subject as a first filter, then look closer. "Engineering" covers civil, electrical, mechanical and more. A university can be strong in one branch and not another. Read the department's own pages and look at its recent research.
- For a master's or PhD, look at people, not just places. A supervisor working on exactly your topic at a university placed 150th can be a better choice than a famous department with no one in your area.
- Check professional recognition. For medicine, engineering and law, a degree may need to be recognised by a professional body in Pakistan, or in the country where you plan to work. Check this with the body itself before you apply.
- Match universities to scholarships. Many scholarships let you choose from a wide range of universities. Use our eligibility checker and the full list of scholarships to see which ones fit your subject, and our study by country guides for costs and visas.
- Remember what the tables measure. Like the overall rankings, subject tables lean on research and reputation. They say little about teaching quality, class sizes or how international students are supported, and positions change every year.
What to do next
Choose your subject, then shortlist five to eight universities that do well in it in both THE and QS. For each one, read the department's pages, check the entry requirements and look for scholarships that cover it. Before you decide, confirm every position on timeshighereducation.com and topuniversities.com, because the publishers are the final word and their tables change each year.
