Personal Statement Zainab Akhtar | Intended field: Computer Engineering
The first computer I ever repaired belonged to my school in Sargodha. It was an old desktop that sat unused in the corner of our computer lab because it would not boot. In Grade 9, with the help of YouTube videos and a lot of patience, I discovered that its hard drive was failing. I convinced my teacher to let me replace it with a used drive from Hall Road in Lahore, which my uncle bought for me on a visit. When the computer finally started, four more students in my class could use it for practical exams. That small success made me realise that I enjoy understanding how machines work and, more than that, making them useful for people.
Since then, I have tried to learn as much as I can. During FSc Pre-Engineering at [college name], I completed free online courses in Python and electronics, and I built a simple Arduino-based system that sends an SMS alert when the water tank on our roof is nearly empty, something every household in our neighbourhood struggles with. I showed it at our college science exhibition, where it won first prize, but the best reward was that three neighbours asked me to build one for them. I scored [percentage]% in my HSSC examinations and [percentage]% in my SSC.
I want to study computer engineering because I am interested in the point where hardware and software meet: embedded systems that can make everyday infrastructure smarter and cheaper. In Pakistan, problems such as water shortages, unreliable electricity and agricultural losses could all be reduced with affordable sensors and good engineering, but there are not enough engineers trained to design such systems at low cost.
I have chosen [Türkiye / Korea] because [for Türkiye: its universities combine strong engineering programmes with a growing technology industry, and I have been impressed by how quickly Turkish companies have developed their own drones and electronics. I also feel a cultural closeness to Türkiye, and I have begun learning Turkish through online lessons, because I know the preparatory language year will be important.] [For Korea: Korea transformed itself into a world leader in electronics within a few decades, and I want to learn from a country that achieved this through education and engineering. I have started learning Hangul and basic Korean, and I am ready to complete the Korean language programme seriously.]
Living far from home will be a challenge, but I believe I am ready. As the eldest of four children, I have helped manage my family's responsibilities since my father started working in Saudi Arabia, and I have learned to be organised and independent. I also enjoy meeting people from different backgrounds; at our college I volunteered to help new students from rural areas settle in, and I hope to bring the same spirit to an international campus.
After graduating, I plan to return to Pakistan and work in embedded systems design, ideally for a company building agricultural or water-monitoring technology. One day I hope to start my own company that designs affordable sensors for Pakistani farmers. I would also like to be an example for girls in my hometown, where many families still hesitate to send daughters into engineering. A scholarship would make this possible for me, and I promise to make full use of it.
- مضمون کے بارے میں عمومی باتیں لکھنا ("Computers are the future")۔
