Motivation Letter Applicant: Hamza Tariq Programme: M.Sc. [Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency / programme name], [University name], Germany Scholarship: DAAD Development-Related Postgraduate Courses (EPOS), [intake year]
Dear Members of the Selection Committee,
In the summer of [year], the 33 kV feeder serving my hometown of Bahawalpur tripped eleven times in a single week while temperatures crossed 47 degrees. I was a final-year electrical engineering student at UET Lahore at the time, and I remember thinking that the problem was not a lack of power plants but a grid that could not cope with demand peaks or absorb the solar energy that was already shining on every rooftop. That question, how a developing grid can integrate distributed renewable energy reliably, has shaped my work since, and it is why I am applying for the M.Sc. [programme name] at [University name] with the support of a DAAD scholarship.
Academic background
I completed my B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, in [year] with a CGPA of [3.42/4.00]. My strongest courses were Power System Analysis, Power Electronics and Renewable Energy Systems. For my final-year project, my team of three designed and simulated a 50 kW grid-tied solar system for a textile unit in Faisalabad using PVsyst and MATLAB/Simulink, including a harmonic analysis of the inverter output. The project taught me how much the technical design of a system depends on the economic and regulatory context around it, a theme I see reflected throughout your curriculum.
Professional experience
Since graduation I have worked for [two years and four months] as an Assistant Engineer at [Company name], a solar EPC company in Lahore. I have been involved in the design and commissioning of more than 30 commercial and industrial rooftop systems, ranging from 20 kW to 1.2 MW. My responsibilities include site surveys, single-line diagrams, protection coordination and preparing net-metering applications for LESCO and FESCO. In [year], I led the technical side of a 600 kW installation at a hospital in Sheikhupura, where we added battery storage so that the operating theatres could ride through load-shedding.
This work has shown me both the opportunity and the limits of what we are doing. Rooftop solar has grown very quickly in Pakistan, but distribution companies are increasingly worried about reverse power flow, voltage rise and lost revenue. Engineers like me can install systems, but very few of us are trained to model their impact on the wider network or to advise on policy and tariff design. I want to close that gap.
Why this programme
I have studied the structure of the [programme name] carefully. The modules in [Smart Grids and Grid Integration], [Energy Economics] and [Energy Storage Systems] address exactly the areas where my knowledge is weakest. I am particularly interested in the work of [Professor Name] on [distribution-grid hosting capacity], and I hope to write my master's thesis on hosting capacity analysis for a Pakistani distribution feeder, using real load data that my employer has agreed to share. The programme's compulsory internship would also give me experience of how German distribution system operators manage high solar penetration, which is directly relevant to the situation Pakistan will face within the next decade.
Studying in Germany specifically matters to me because of the Energiewende. Germany has already managed many of the integration challenges that Pakistan is only beginning to meet, and I want to learn not only the engineering solutions but also the regulatory and market mechanisms that made them possible.
Plans after the degree
After completing the degree, I plan to return to Pakistan and work at the intersection of engineering and planning, ideally with a distribution company, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), or a development-sector energy programme. In the medium term, I want to help distribution companies carry out hosting capacity studies so that rooftop solar can keep growing without destabilising local networks. My employer has also expressed interest in my rejoining in a grid-studies role, and I have attached a letter confirming this.
I am confident that my practical experience, combined with the academic training offered by [University name], will allow me to make a meaningful contribution to Pakistan's energy transition. Thank you for considering my application.
Yours sincerely,
Hamza Tariq [City], [Date]
- کسی اقتباس سے نہیں، کسی مخصوص لمحے سے آغاز کریں۔ آپ کے کام یا آبائی شہر کا کوئی حقیقی تجربہ "Since childhood I have been passionate about..."
- "ڈگری کے بعد" والا حصہ بھول جانا، یا "I will serve my country" جیسا مبہم حصہ لکھنا۔
